Jeffco Parents Focus on School Nutrition Gets Busy
Over the summer, the members of the Jeffco Parents Focus on School Nutrition committee were busy meeting with Jeffco Schools Food and Nutrition Services personnel in efforts to better understand and improve the nutritional quality of foods offered at our schools. We made some initial progress steps in the communication and education process and we look forward to continued progress towards our Mission Statement and goals.
Your child/children may have already come home excited about "Tasting plums from California, or corn from Nebraska"! Food and Nutrition Services has designed fruit and vegetable promotions at the Elementary level for this school year. The goal is to promote new and familiar fruits and vegetables , encouraging students to enjoy all types of fruits and vegetables. After sampling they can then choose that fruit or vegetable as one of their side dishes. The September samplings were well received and we look forward toward apples and squash in October.
Along with the new fruit and vegetable promotions the school lunch menu has taken on a new look. There are some new menu items like Mandarin Chicken Salad, Tuna Salad Sandwich, and new side dishes. The menus are now written with more definition so you and your child can make better nutritional choices. A few nutritionally less desirable menu items have been removed at the elementary level as well. We look forward to more positive changes from Food and Nutrition Services as the school year progresses.
We would like to thank our Food Service Manager, Lori Burris, who continues working hard to improve the nutritional content of the foods our children are being offered at Wilmot. She has added some exciting new snack cart items such as two types of Granola Bars, Sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, and more fresh fruit and veggies.
